Mike O'Brian continues his road trip East along Routes 5&20 into Auburn. But just before you enter town, make a quick stop at the Bass Pro Shops to take in their giant fish aquarium. It's enormous with an amazing variety of fish! The kids will love it!
Once in downtown Auburn, a must see is the Seward House at 33 South Street. Seward, Lincoln's best friend, had a fine art collection beyond belief and all yours to see Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $6 each. (315) 252-1283.
Auburn is where Routes 5 and 20 split. Follow Route 20 east for about eight miles into Skaneateles.
Looking for overnight accommodations? Try something a bit different at an Adirondack-style accommodation called Finger Lakes Lodging, 857 West Genesee Street. (Rt. 20). Affordable and rustic with a touch of class. Rates start at $144 per night, midweek. (315) 217-0222.
Into Skaneateles we go? No, not yet! Hang a right turn onto Route 41A, along Skaneateles Lake's west side up to a new vineyard and winery called Anyela's. Enjoy a fantastic tasting room and daily tours, not to mention breathtaking views out on the terrace. Open every day this Fall from noon to 5 p.m. Tip: Grab a table outside and order a bottle of Chardonnay and cheese & grape platter. Kick back, relax and take in the joy of the Finger Lakes!
Now, have your designated driver take you into the picturesque Village of Skaneateles for shopping and strolling. This very walkable village is home to the Sherwood Inn , right across the street from the park, for a quick bite to eat in the tavern. A good lunchtime choice.
If you're in the mood for Italian food in an old converted auto repair shop, try Joe's Pasta Garage, 28 Jordan Street. It's fun and family-friendly.
There are many other 'food' choices around town that are all good and offer a variety of menus and price ranges.
Skaneateles! A nice way to end your day on your 5&20 road trip.
