Syracuse, New York, September 25, 2012 - Marking its ninth year of existence, the Syracuse International Film Festival (SIFF) is a four-day event that strives to bring together filmmakers, independent documentaries, and films from around the world each year. SIFF is devoted to education through the arts and have excelled doing so annually with its affiliations with Syracuse University (SU) and Le Moyne College.
The 9th Annual SIFF welcomes filmmakers from over 20 countries. With the unfortunate social unrest happening in many countries, this year's theme focuses on Social Justice, honoring SIFF's Co-Founder and Festival Artistic Director Owen Shapiro's student Bassel Shahade, who was killed while filming the attacks in Syria. The Social Justice showcase features film screenings from several countries including Israel, France, Italy, Finland, Australia and the United States.
In addition, Film In Syracuse and SU have planned a memorial service for Bassel that will take place on Wednesday, October 10 at SU's Hendrick's Chapel. Following the service will be a concert by Syrian composer and pianist Malek Jandali, who has dedicated his time in writing music for the videos dedicated to Bassel, which will begin at 7pm in SU's Setnor Auditorium.
This year's festival is filled with the human responsibility of shedding light on Social Justice as well as screening many other artistic films from established and emerging filmmakers from around the world. Among those in attendance are Italian producer Gian Luca Baldi, American actress Karen Black, Syrian composer and pianist Malek Jandali, renowned Canadian pianist Marika Bournaki, award-winning director Rob Nilsson, American actor Ron Perlman, and American actor Tom Bower.
