Syracuse Convention and Visitors Bureau buildingThe Syracuse Convention & Visitors Bureau (SCVB) plays a vital role in Onondaga County's economic development strategy through its focus on growing the area's $776 million tourism industry. As the county's official and accredited destination marketing organization, the SCVB works to generate short-term and future income for businesses, employment for residents and tax revenue for local government.

In 2010, the SCVB:

  • Generated 149,319 website visits and 3,444 inquiries from potential visitors calling or requesting visitor guides.
  • Secured 63 group event bookings, representing 33,329 room nights valued at more than $50 million in future tourism business.
  • Received, for the 8th consecutive year, the Pinnacle Award for Excellence in meeting and convention services; the only CVB recipient in New York State.

Marketing

Targeted marketing efforts in the past year have included:

  • Increased media outreach initiatives targeting Ottawa, Ontario.
  • Increased number of media tours from qualified travel journalists to continue to build Syracuse's reputation as an excellent destination for both leisure and meetings.

The SCVB has bolstered group events (conventions, meetings and sporting activities), doubling short-range bookings, including:
